After an early start our crew left BP heading south on SH1 at 8:30am. The weather on the day looked promising for sunny skies but there was a little lingering mist hanging around, with some thicker fog further into the Waikato region.
We left SH1 and turned onto Island Block Road and from there on we travelled along some of the very scenic back roads of Waikato. Large swampy areas and lakes, rolling green hilly pastures and the Hauraki plains. Perfect driving for those with soft top cars. However, as Richard said: we found the worst section of road in the country. Yes, in one part it was very lumpy, bumpy and poorly patched over. Sounds pretty normal really.
After a couple of hours driving, we finally arrived at Ross Bros Muscle Car Garage meeting up with some of the Midlands crew and Nelson gave us a very informative dialogue on the cars that were being refurbished or modified, the history of the Ross family-owned business and all the amazing race cars, American muscle cars, motorbikes and huge heavy earthmoving machinery. And what an amazing collection it is, an absolutely superb display well worth the trip down from Auckland to see.
Leaving Ross Bros, we headed into Cambridge township for lunch at Good Union in their semi-outdoors area where they had reserved tables waiting for us. All up we had 34 people in attendance. There were a couple of other groups there for lunch too, so it was quite busy. Food was very nice, although there were a couple of hiccups with delayed or misplaced orders. Overall, as always, we had another great day out.
